In many ways, shares behave in a similar way to children. Each child has its own personality from birth. Some are obstreperous and incredibly difficult to look after. Others are placid and calm, never causing a moment of grief. If you can get to know the child, then looking after him or her suddenly becomes much simpler.

The particular idiosyncrasies of that share will suddenly seem within the realms of normal behaviour.

Technical analysis provides us with tools to assist us in realising this goal. If this is the first time that you have come into contact with technical analysis, you will want to read this article a couple of times to consolidate the principles. Remember your first day on your job?

Yet, over time, you adjusted and your work became second nature. Trading is exactly the same. Initially, it will seem confusing and strange, but with a bit of effort, you will finally work it out.

Be patient with yourself. If you are already a skilled trader, then you will find that the following section will act as a form of revision. In any endeavour, the people who excel are those who conquer the basics. When playing cricket, there are actually very few skills that you need to have; for example, catching, batting, bowling and running. Yet it is the application of these basic skills that will separate the cricket professional from the backyard superstar.

As technical analysts, it is our goal to form a view regarding whether a particular share is going up, going down, or moving in a sideways band. Even though there are only three directions in which a share can move, it is sometimes a tricky task to see exactly what a share is doing. Simplicity is essential. If you do not want to agree to these Terms of Use, you must not access or use the Website. We may revise and update these Terms of Use at any time in our sole discretion. Candlesticks show that emotion by visually representing the size of price moves with different colors. The candlestick has a wide part, which is called the "real body. This real body represents the price range between the open and close of that day's trading. When the real body is filled in or black, it means the close was lower than the open. Traders can alter these colors in their trading platform.

For example, a down candle is often shaded red instead of black, and up candles are often shaded green instead of white. Just above and below the real body are the " shadows " or "wicks. Bar charts and candlestick charts show the same information, just in a different way.

The above chart shows the same exchange-traded fund ETF over the same time period. The lower chart uses colored bars, while the upper uses colored candlesticks. Some traders prefer to see the thickness of the real bodies, while others prefer the clean look of bar charts. While these price movements sometimes appear random, at other times they form patterns that traders use for analysis or trading purposes.

Here a sampling to get you started. Patterns are separated into bullish and bearish. No pattern works all the time, as candlestick patterns represent tendencies in price movement, not guarantees. The pattern indicates that sellers are back in control and that the price could continue to decline. This is reflected in the chart by a long green real body engulfing a small red real body. With bulls having established some control, the price could head higher. The small real body can be either red or green.

The pattern shows a stalling of the buyers and then the sellers taking control. More selling could develop. The pattern shows indecision on the part of the buyers. If the price continues higher afterward, all may still be well with the uptrend, but a down candle following this pattern indicates a further slide. The bullish harami is the opposite or the upside down bearish harami. A downtrend is in play, and a small real body green occurs inside the large real body red of the previous day.

This tells the technician that the trend is pausing. If it is followed by another up day, more upside could be forthcoming. The doji is within the real body of the prior session. The implications are the same as the bearish harami. Let's look at a few more patterns in black and white, which are also common colors for candlestick charts. This pattern starts out with what is called a "long white day.If you're looking for a buy-side equities job in New York City this year, you might want to give Candlestick Capital a try.

Even more so if you happen to have left Deutsche Bank. Bench joined Candlestick in June according to his LinkedIn profile. However, Candlestick isn't restricting itself to plundering Citadel; in the past few months it's also recruited Chris Tierney as head of data from consumer company Schonfeld and John Black as head trader from Piper Jaffray.

It's not clear whether that's the lot of whether more hiring is coming, but with Bench in charge Deutsche's equities traders might want to get in touch. At the very least they might feel better for it- Bench's positivity is supposed to be infectious.
